How Chrome Extensions Make Money

The Chrome Web Store stopped processing payments years ago, so every extension that charges now bills through its own system. That pushed the market into four models. Freemium subscription is the most durable: the extension is free and a paid tier unlocks the part people reach for daily. A one-time license suits utilities people buy once and keep, like converters and downloaders. Some of the largest extensions are free front doors to a paid web app, where the browser is only the capture point and the money sits in the backend. Affiliate and B2B sales tools work as well, but only run openly, since hidden affiliate injection is what turned the category toxic and now gets flagged in review.

What Installs and Ratings Say About Revenue

Nothing in the Chrome Web Store shows earnings, and no dataset can reconstruct them, because the billing happens elsewhere. What the store does publish is install base, rating, review volume and how recently the developer shipped, and those four together bound the question well enough to act on. A large install base with a weak rating means the demand is real and nobody is satisfying it. A modest install base with a high rating and steady updates usually means a small paying audience someone serves properly. An install count that has not moved in a year alongside a dead update history means the extension is coasting, whatever it once earned. We show those signals instead of a revenue column, because inventing the column would be worse than leaving it out.

How to Find the Most Profitable Chrome Extensions

Start from the category, not the extension. Filter to a lane you could actually build in, sort by install base to find the ceiling, then sort by rating to find who is failing at it. The Chrome Web Store gives you neither a full ranking nor any history, so the usual way to research a category is scrolling a page of editorially chosen tools. Profitable tracks every live listing and snapshots install counts over time, so you can sort the whole store and see which extensions are still growing rather than which ones Google decided to feature. The pattern worth chasing is a category with strong install numbers spread across tools nobody has updated in years.

Chrome Extension Revenue FAQ

Can you make money from Chrome extensions?
Yes, though the distribution is brutal. Most listings in the store never clear a few dozen users, and the ones that earn cluster in a thin band of daily-use tools with a clear paid tier. The realistic path is not a breakout consumer extension, it is a narrow tool a specific group needs every day and will expense. Profitable ranks every live extension by install base and growth, so you can see where that band sits rather than guess at it.
Are Chrome extensions passive income?
Not really. Chrome ships breaking platform changes on its own schedule: Manifest V3 forced a rewrite across most of the store, and permission and privacy rules keep tightening. The upkeep is light next to a full SaaS, but an extension left alone drifts into broken and the rating follows within a release or two. Treat it as a small product that needs an owner, not a set-and-forget asset.
Can you charge for a Chrome extension in the Web Store?
Not through the store. Google shut down Chrome Web Store payments and the in-app purchase API in 2021, so there is no paid listing and no store checkout any more. Everything that charges today runs its own billing, usually a license key or an account the extension signs into. That is also why install counts say nothing about revenue: two extensions with identical numbers can be a free hobby project and a subscription business.
Which Chrome extension categories are the most profitable?
Privacy and Workflow carry the highest average reach per listing, with Accessibility and Social close behind, so those lanes deliver more users per competing extension than the store's biggest category does. The averages are pulled up by a few giants in each, so read them as where the ceiling sits rather than what a typical listing gets. Tools holds more extensions than any other category by a wide margin and the typical listing in it goes nowhere.
