How to Find Steam Game Ideas With Data

This tracker covers the Steam catalog with daily data on estimated revenue, live player counts, review velocity, pricing, and community tags. Use it to validate a game concept before building: filter to your genre or tag combination, sort by estimated revenue, and study the games that work. The hover preview shows each game's trailer and screenshots without leaving the table — scan a whole niche's art styles and production quality in minutes. Tags are especially powerful because they're crowdsourced: 'Roguelike Deckbuilder' or 'Psychological Horror' map to how players actually categorize games, not how stores file them.

Understanding Steam Reviews and Revenue Signals

Review count is the single most useful public number on Steam — it tracks sales at roughly a 1:30 ratio, it can't be bought, and it accumulates predictably. Rating percentage signals quality: above 80% ('Very Positive') games benefit from Steam's recommendation algorithm, while 'Mixed' (40-70%) games fight it. The combination is what matters for niche research: a tag full of games with high revenue but mediocre ratings is an opportunity — demonstrated demand, dissatisfied players, room for a better entry. Daily CCU snapshots add the time dimension: which games are alive versus coasting on old sales.

Steam Game Stats FAQ

How do you estimate Steam game revenue?
We use the Boxleiter method — the industry-standard approach for estimating Steam sales from public data. Total review count × ~30 (the review-to-sales ratio) gives estimated units sold, multiplied by the game's price for gross revenue. The 30-day revenue column applies the same math to reviews gained in the last month, showing what a game earns right now rather than lifetime. Free-to-play games show no estimate because in-game purchase revenue can't be derived from review counts.
What is CCU on Steam?
CCU (Concurrent Users) is the number of players in a game at this moment, pulled live from Steam's official API. It's the fastest-moving health signal: a paid game holding 100+ CCU months after launch is retaining players, while a CCU near zero means the game is effectively dormant regardless of lifetime sales. We snapshot CCU daily for every tracked game.
How to find profitable Steam game niches?
Filter by tags and sort by estimated revenue to see what each niche actually earns. The 'Popular but Hated' insight surfaces games that sold 60K+ copies yet rate Mixed or worse — proven demand the existing games fail to satisfy, a gap to do better. 'Indie Money Makers' shows what solo-scale games earn. Cross-reference a tag's revenue numbers against its game count: high revenue spread across few games is an underserved niche worth investigating.
How accurate are Steam revenue estimates?
Review-based estimates are typically within 2x of reality, which is accurate enough for comparing niches and spotting outliers — the use cases that matter for market research. The biggest error sources are heavy discounting (we use current price), regional pricing, and games that sell disproportionately in markets that review less. Treat estimates as order-of-magnitude signals, not accounting data.
How many reviews does a successful Steam game have?
Each review represents roughly 30 sales, so 100 reviews ≈ 3,000 copies sold — about $45K gross at a $15 price point. Indie games crossing 500 reviews (~15,000 copies) are solid successes, and 2,000+ reviews generally marks a hit. Use the review-count filter to study games at whatever success tier you're targeting.
