Why Wishlists Predict Steam Sales

Wishlists are the closest thing to a demand forecast Steam gives you before launch. Launch-week sales track the list closely, and the list keeps working afterwards because Steam emails wishlisters at release and every time the game discounts. Steam keeps the real counts private, so we rank by community-group followers, the same public proxy the rest of the industry uses. Most Upcoming Games Launch to Nobody

There are over 50,000 unreleased games on Steam and the median one has fewer than fifty followers. Narrowing to the games actually launching in the next month does not improve that number, it lowers it, so imminent release is no guarantee of an audience. Only a few hundred titles have passed 10,000 followers. The games you see promoted are a rounding error against what ships, and a page that launches without an audience does not get one from the store. Sort by followers to see where demand concentrates, then look at what those games have in common.

Steam Wishlist FAQ

What is the difference between a Steam follow and a wishlist?
A wishlist tells Steam you intend to buy, and it triggers an email when the game launches or discounts. A follow just subscribes you to the game's updates. The practical difference for research is visibility: Valve publishes follower counts but keeps wishlist numbers private, so followers are the only public read on pre-launch demand.
What is the most wishlisted game on Steam?
Nobody can answer that exactly, because Steam never publishes wishlist counts. What is public is each game's follower count, and the leader among unreleased games carries several hundred thousand followers, far ahead of anything else. The top of the list turns over as big titles release and leave it, so treat the order as the best available reading of pre-launch demand rather than a literal wishlist ranking.
How do you check the most wishlisted games on Steam?
Steam does not publish wishlist counts, so there is no official list.
