How Much Do Steam Developers Make?
Valve takes 30% of a game's gross sales, falling to 25% past $10 million and 20% past $50 million, and the developer keeps what remains after refunds and tax. That split matters far less than the distribution it applies to. The median Steam game earns around $1,000 in estimated lifetime gross, and roughly two thirds of the catalog never passes $5,000, so for most studios the platform cut is not what decides the outcome.
How Many Developers Actually Make Money on Steam
Close to 79,000 developers have released a game. Fewer than 9,000 have earned an estimated $100,000 across everything they have shipped, and roughly 3,900 have cleared a million, which is under four percent. That is the shape of the market: a long list of studios, a short earning end, and almost everyone in between making something closer to pocket money than a salary. Read any studio on this table against that backdrop rather than against the ones above it.
The Top Studios Ship Fewer Games, Not More
The studios at the top did not get there by shipping constantly. FromSoftware, CD PROJEKT RED and Larian all sit near the top on catalogs of under ten games, and Game Science reached billions in estimated revenue on a handful. Volume helps a publisher aggregate revenue, but for a developer hit rate matters more than count. Sort by median revenue per title to see which studios convert reliably rather than which have simply been around longest.
