What Apple Publishes, and What It Does Not

Apple gives no download count and no revenue figure for any app, which is why no honest table can show you what an app earns. What Apple does publish is a ranking. Three charts per category per country, refreshed daily: Top Free and Top Paid rank by downloads, and Top Grossing ranks by money taken. A Top Grossing position is Apple stating which apps earn more than which, and it is the only money signal on this page that is not a guess. The two numbers beside it are a rating count, which is the closest public proxy for how many people actually use an app, and the price, which is the one figure Apple states outright.

Reading a Rank Without Being Misled by It

A rank only means something next to the chart it came from, so every position here carries its category and storefront. Fourth in Puzzle on the US store and fourth in Weather are not comparable achievements, and Apple caps every chart at 100 places, so a narrow category is a far shorter queue than a broad one. This matters most for money: an app can sit high in Top Free and nowhere in Top Grossing, which tells you people install it and do not pay. The gap between those two positions is usually more informative than either one alone.

Most of the Catalogue Is Quieter Than It Looks

Every app in this table was found on a chart, so these are already the apps Apple decided to surface. Even so, the median one holds 241 ratings and 43.6% hold fewer than 100. Reaching a category chart is not the same as having traction, and the long tail of a crowded category is full of apps that got listed and went nowhere. Read it as a floor rather than a ceiling: if a category's chart is thin on ratings, the incumbents are weaker than their positions suggest.

Where the Gaps Are

The interesting rows are the ones where the signals disagree. High rating counts against a low average rating is proven demand with an unhappy userbase, which is the clearest build-something-better signal available. An app charting in one country and absent in another is a localization gap rather than a verdict on the idea. A paid app holding a grossing position on a modest rating count is earning without a crowd, which usually means a narrow audience paying properly. Filter by category first to see how a niche behaves as a group, then look for the rows that break the pattern.

Top Grossing Apps FAQ

How do you check how much revenue an app makes?
You cannot get an exact figure from a public source, because Apple publishes neither downloads nor revenue for any app on the App Store. Paid tools such as Sensor Tower and Appfigures sell modelled estimates, which are inferences rather than reported numbers. What is genuinely public is Apple's Top Grossing chart, which ranks apps by money taken within each category and country. That gives you a reliable ordering of who earns more without inventing a dollar amount.
What is the difference between Top Free, Top Paid and Top Grossing?
Top Free and Top Paid rank by download volume, split by whether the app costs money upfront. Top Grossing ranks by revenue, so it counts in-app purchases and subscriptions as well as the purchase price. That is why a free app can top the grossing chart while a cheap paid app sits high in Top Paid and nowhere in grossing. For judging a market, Top Grossing is the chart that tells you money is changing hands.
How many apps are in an App Store chart?
Apple serves 100 positions per chart, and a chart is one combination of category, chart type and country. Narrow categories often return fewer, because there are not 100 apps competing in them. This page walks 89 category nodes across three chart types per storefront, so an app can hold many positions at once: one in its own category, one in a parent category, and one in the overall chart.
Does App Store ranking differ by country?
Yes, and the difference is often large enough to change a decision. Charts are computed per storefront, so an app can rank highly in Japan and not appear in the United States at all. Rating counts are per storefront too, which is why the same app shows tens of thousands of ratings on one store and a few hundred on another. This table covers the United States, United Kingdom and Japan, and the charted-in column shows every storefront an app has appeared in.
How often do App Store charts update?
Apple recomputes the charts daily. We walk every category, chart type and storefront once a month and keep each walk as its own snapshot, so a position here is a point in a series rather than a live reading. That history is the part worth watching: a single rank tells you who is winning now, while movement across snapshots tells you which categories are being entered and which incumbents are slipping.
