Average Kindle book length by genre

Median page count of charting Kindle titles in each top-level Amazon genre, longest to shortest. The bar shows the median; the range column is the typical 25th-to-75th-percentile spread. Length is a genre signal as much as a craft choice — readers expect a romance to run long and a children's book to run short.

What the average book length actually is

Across the Amazon Kindle bestsellers we track, the median title runs about 136 pages — but that one number hides a huge spread. Genre is the biggest driver of length: children's and low-content books run short by design, while romance and literary fiction run long to satisfy reader expectations. The "average book" is close to a myth; the average book in your genre is the number that actually helps you plan a manuscript.

Why length varies so much by genre

Reader expectations set length. Romance readers want a full emotional arc and often binge a series, so books run long. Children's books, journals, and other low-content titles are short by design. Non-fiction how-to, reference, and self-help land in the middle. Writing well outside your genre's norm sends the wrong signal: a 60-page “novel” or a 400-page picture book both look off to readers and to Amazon's also-bought engine, which clusters titles partly by shape and category.

How long should your book be?

Find your genre in the table and aim for its typical range — the 25th-to-75th-percentile band. Landing inside that range is the safe default: long enough to meet expectations, short enough to keep print costs and KENP page-read economics sane. Going well above or below it should be a deliberate craft choice, not an accident. Remember these are page counts of books that already chart, so they describe the shape of titles that are working, not a rule you must obey.

Methodology

Population. Active, likely-KDP Kindle titles (our self-published heuristic) that currently chart in at least one Amazon category. Page count is parsed from each title's print-length field; entries over 5,000 pages are dropped as data errors or box sets.

Genre. Each title is grouped by the top-level Amazon category it charts in (Romance, Children's, Business & Money, and so on). A title that charts in more than one genre is counted in each. Only genres with more than 200 tracked titles are shown.

Median, not mean. We report the median page count because length distributions have long tails — a few box sets or very short titles would skew an average. The range column is the 25th-to-75th-percentile spread, i.e. where the middle half of titles in that genre sit.

Pages, not words. Figures are page counts as Amazon reports them, not word counts. A rough conversion is ~250–300 words per page, but it varies with trim size, font, and formatting.

Average Book Length FAQ

What is the average book length in pages?
The median Amazon Kindle bestseller we track runs about 136 pages, with the middle 50% of titles falling between 92 and 229 pages. That single number hides a wide spread, though — genre is by far the biggest driver, so the average length for your specific genre (in the table above) is the more useful figure.
What is the average book length by genre?
It ranges enormously: from about 55 pages for children's up to roughly 353 pages for sci-fi & fantasy. The table above lists the median and the typical (25th–75th percentile) range for every major genre we track.
How long is the average novel?
Fiction runs long. In our data Sci-Fi & Fantasy is the longest genre at about 353 pages, with mystery, romance, and literary fiction close behind. A typical genre novel lands in roughly the 250–350 page band — well above the 136-page all-genre median, which is pulled down by short non-fiction, children's books, and low-content titles.
How many pages should my book be?
Match your genre's norm. Find your category in the table above and aim for its typical range (the 25th–75th percentile band). Landing inside that range is the safe default: long enough to meet reader expectations, short enough to keep production cost and Kindle Unlimited page-read economics reasonable. A book far shorter or longer than its genre peers is a harder sell to both readers and Amazon's recommendation engine.
Where does this book-length data come from?
It's computed from our first-party books database: the print length of active, likely-self-published Kindle titles that currently chart in their category, grouped by Amazon's top-level genre. We report the median (robust to a few very long or very short outliers) and exclude entries over 5,000 pages. Lengths are in pages, not words.
