Who Actually Makes Money Building Fortnite Maps

Epic's engagement pool pays on minutes played, so a creator's earnings are the sum of what every one of their maps holds. That rewards portfolios as much as hits: a studio running ten mid-sized maps can out-earn someone with a single breakout, because the pool does not care which map the minutes came from. Sorting by estimated payout rather than by biggest map is what surfaces those operations, and the gap between a creator's total CCU and their best map is the quickest read on which kind they are. Hit rate is the other half: it counts every map they have published, not only the ones that worked, so you can tell a studio landing four maps in five from one that shipped twenty and got lucky once.

How Epic Pays, and When

Epic puts 40% of net Item Shop and V-Bucks revenue into the engagement pool each month, then splits it across creator maps by minutes played, weighted by day-one and day-seven retention. Epic's own disclosures put that at roughly $1,100 to $1,500 per million minutes. Payment lands about 30 days after the month it was earned, so a map that breaks out this week is paid for it next month. The figure here is gross: the store fee Epic pays on the revenue funding the pool runs 12% to 30% depending on platform, averaging about 26%. Since January 2026 there is a second stream on top, in-island item sales, where creators keep 100% of the V-Bucks value until 31 January 2027 and 50% after. Epic publishes nothing per map for it, so every number on this page is engagement only and any creator selling items earns more than it shows.

Why Median Retention Is the Number to Watch

Any map can get lucky once. A creator whose maps repeatedly hold players the next day is running a formula, and that is the thing worth studying before you build. Median day-one retention across a creator's catalogue is far harder to fake than a single map's peak, and because Epic weights retention into the engagement score, it compounds directly into what they earn per minute played.

Who is the biggest Fortnite Creative map maker?

By combined estimated payout, studios like Hive and Bullseye sit at the top, each running ten or more maps above 10 concurrent players rather than relying on one hit. Epic itself holds the largest concurrency by far through Battle Royale and its other first-party modes, but earns nothing from the creator engagement pool.

How much do top Fortnite creators earn?

The largest studios here project to close to $2M a month from the engagement pool, based on minutes played across their whole catalogue. Epic said 58 creators cleared $1M in 2024 and seven cleared $10M. These figures are engagement payout only, before Epic's platform fee, and they exclude in-island sales and brand deals, which Epic does not publish per map.
